WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS TO RESUME TRADITIONAL TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
The birthplace of Texas welcomes the public next weekend for the return of its traditional Texas Independence Day celebration.
This year marks the 190th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and this will be the first full celebration at Washington-on-the-Brazos since the historic site re-opened in the fall after a large-scale renovation project.
Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation President Joel Romo, speaking during Tuesday’s Community Corner on KWHI, said the site is “state-of-the-art” and – after the facelift – demonstrates Texan pride in a new way.
The festivities begin on Friday, February 27th with “Echoes of Independence: A Lantern Tour”, a ticketed event from 6 to 9 p.m. where guests will take a candlelit walk through the new Washington townsite and witness historic scenes surrounding the creation of a new nation.
Activities will continue on Saturday, February 28th with opening ceremonies and a parade at 10:15 a.m. That will be followed by performances throughout the day at the Bullock Amphitheater and Barrington Living History Farm, as well as historical demonstrations at Independence Hall and throughout the townsite.
Historical Foundation Administrator Ginger Moreland said she is excited for all of the visitors who will be checking out the upgraded site for the first time.
Entry to Saturday’s event is free. Food trucks and vendors will be available, and shuttle services will be offered.
