CUB FOOTBALL OPENS THE SEASON WITH A 49-14 WIN OVER HUNTSVILLE

The Brenham Cub Football Team were men on a mission last (Friday) night as they took care of business with a 49-14 victory over the Huntsville Hornets.

The game had to endure a thirty-minute lightning delay, which pushed the start time back to 7:30pm. The weather did not affect the turnout at all as the game was played before a packed house, and on Seniors Night, the Cubs sent their fans home happy.

Huntsville got the ball first, and drove it right down the field. Junior QB Zay Adolphe scored on a nine-yard run, and Jonathan DeLeon added the extra point to give the Hornets an early 7-0 lead with 8:04 left to play in the first quarter.

It would not take the Cubs very long to tie it back up. New starting QB Roland Branch Jr. found WR Nate Rau on a 58-yard touchdown pass, and Bleu Cienega made the extra point to tie it at 7-7 with 7:24 left to play in the first quarter.

On the next drive, the Cub defense held Huntsville to a punt attempt. The snap went over the punter's head, he ran back to the end zone to pick it up, and try to get the punt off, but it got blocked. Brenham's Ledrick Walker Jr., then, picked it up, and ran it in for a score. Cienega added the PAT to make it a 14-7 Cub lead with 5:15 to go in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Jakoby Dixon showed Brenham fans, that he is back and ready for action in the second quarter. Dixon capped off a drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 11:44 until halftime. A little while later, he broke loose for a 47-yard touchdown run at the 4:28 mark.

The Cubs went into the locker room with a 28-7 halftime lead.

Brenham added two more touchdowns on a 45-yard touchdown run from C.J. Glover and an 11-yard touchdown pass from Branch to Markell Lewis. Those two scores gave the Cubs 42-7 advantage with 5:46 to go in the third quarter.

The Hornets got one of touchdowns back near the end of the third quarter as Ja'Khavien Birks scored a rushing touchdown with 1:22 left to cut the Brenham lead to 42-14.

C.J. Glover capped off the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run to make it 49-14 at 9:19.

Afterwards, Coach Danny Youngs brought in the reserves to finish out the evening with a win.
