BRENHAM FIRE OFFICIALS OFFER FOURTH OF JULY SAFETY TIPS
As families and friends prepare to gather this weekend for Fourth of July festivities, Brenham fire officials urge the public to use caution in order to remain safe when celebrating.
Fire Marshal Roger Williams reminds citizens that city ordinance prohibits the possession or use of fireworks in the city or within 5,000 feet of city limits. In areas of Washington County where fireworks are allowed, residents should remember to supervise children handling fireworks, avoid pointing them at another person or discharging them in close proximity to others, have a supply of water on standby, and make sure fireworks have properly discharged before getting rid of them.
Williams says people should be very mindful of sparklers, as while they look relatively harmless, they can be very dangerous.
Residents are also encouraged to take precaution when cooking or grilling, and to always keep an eye on any open flames. Williams says anyone who plans to grill needs to make sure they correctly dispose of the charcoal or wood they use.
Williams says the current forecast for this weekend shows there is a good chance of rain, and while the area has seen rain recently, it remains just as important to be careful.
In case of an accident, residents should call the fire department or other emergency responders as quickly as possible.
