BRENHAM POLICE DEPARTMENT REVIEWING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
CITY ISSUES STATEMENT REITERATING COMMITMENT TO EQUAL TREATMENT
City of Brenham leaders said Thursday they are actively reviewing police policies to ensure best practices are being performed.
With police brutality being a prominent topic in today’s conversations, City Manager James Fisher said at Thursday’s Brenham City Council meeting that the Brenham Police Department has completed a thorough review of its standard operating procedures. He said the department’s policies do not allow officers to perform choke holds or bar holds.
Fisher said Police Chief Ron Parker, Captain Dant Lange, Captain Lloyd Powell, and the rest of the officers are evaluating current practices to ensure the department is providing the best service it can at all times to everyone.
Fisher said no single person or event will fix the issues facing the country, and those issues will not be resolved in one day. He said it will take everyone working together through a series of steps to get through these challenges.
Fisher also read a prepared statement issued to the community and signed by the mayor and each member of the council. In the statement, the city said city leaders work each day to provide an environment that respects the dignity of everyone and does not tolerate hatred, injustice, or racism.

After reading the statement, Fisher announced the city is planning to host a community picnic July 19th at 6 p.m. at Henderson and Fireman’s Parks. Along with hot dogs and sno-cones, Fisher said the event will give the public a chance to meet with law enforcement and city and county leaders, getting to know them as people. He said the way to fix this national crisis is one home and one community at a time.
