The city has added a StoryWalk® to Fireman’s Park, providing an outdoor reading experience along the trails to promote reading and exercise.

A StoryWalk® takes the pages of a children’s book, laminates them, and places them on display boards along a walking trail.  At Fireman’s Park, a series of approximately 20 signs featuring the children’s picture books “The Wonky Donkey” and “The Dinky Donkey” have been spread throughout the half-mile trail.  The display boards are spaced out along the trail to allow for plenty of room to practice social distancing.

Families can begin the story at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library near the Michael Mansfield Owsley Memorial Playground and Serenity Garden, winding through the park and ending back near the garden.  Park hours are from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Librarian Andria Heiges said the program “promotes literacy, getting outside, and connecting with family”.

StoryWalks® were created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.

The city invites the public to share their StoryWalk® experience on Facebook and Instagram using #brenhamlibrary or #brenhamparks.  Any local children’s book author that would like to share stories can contact the library at 979-337-7201.

  1. Brenham is in desperate need for a sidewalk from heb to sonic. I have ran across people many times on street walking. There is a hill there and no way to see them. A little money needs to go that way to protect someones life.

    1. Yes.
      Yes!
As we discussed 2 years ago? at the meeting in the library, for the future of Brenham, this town needs sidewalks on both sides of business 290 and business 36, all the way from one side of town to the other.
Yes, some home owners will lose 6′ of front yard space, but the city has an easement on it already that makes it unusable to build on anyways( they could even get a tax reduction).
This would allow for all of the citizens and visitors of Brenham to be able to bike, walk, skate, skateboard, scooter, and any other means of transportation that does not want to be run over by cars on our narrow streets.
This will cost money and take take time, yes, but it doesn’t need to be done all at once.
Just a few sections at a time, ovet a few years, and it would be no problem.
      It would be wonderful.
If the city Fathers ( and Mothers) can waste all they do on other things, this would be something that would benefit more citizens than most projects that I have seen proposed and/or completed as of late.
