Blinn beats UH-Victoria, 5-3

Buccaneers splits a pair of games after losing to Tyler to open the day

GALVESTON, Texas – Blinn College softball jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings and was able to hold on to beat University of Houston – Victoria 5-3 to close out the Galveston College Invitation Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers finished the tournament with a 2-3 record to open the season. Blinn lost to Tyler Junior College 6-5 to open the day to go 1-1 on Saturday.

Courtney White had a solid game against Victoria by going 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple while scoring a run and knocking in another. Katie Andrie also hit a triple to go along with a single while scoring twice. Sam Junkin picked up the win by pitching nearly five innings and only allowing three hits and no earned runs.

Blinn was able to get a run in the second inning when Andrie started the inning with a single and later scored on a RBI single to center by White for a 1-0 lead.

Meghann Wrinkle got things started for the Buccaneers in the fourth and then Lauren Silver followed with a single. With two on, White nailed a triple to drive in a pair of runs for a 3-0 lead. Cheyenne Trader was able to knock White in with a single to center for a 4-0 advantage.

Blinn looked to add an insurance run in the fifth inning when Andrie triple and then was brought in by a single by White for a 5-0 lead. Victoria scored three runs in the seventh but the Buccaneers were able to hold on for the victory.

In the game against Tyler, Blinn fell behind 6-2 in the fourth and was nearly able to complete the comeback but lost 6-5 to open the day.

Silver was able to knock in two runs while Wrinkle also had an RBI double in the loss.

Blinn will play in the Northeast Texas Community College tournament on Feb. 5 with a game against Northeast Texas at 1 p.m.
