The Cubs (22-8) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, stringing together five straight two-out hits.
Any hopes for a Cougar comeback were crushed in the second inning as the Cubs struck for 11 runs on eight hits.
The inning was highlighted by Sam McElreath’s two home runs, including a grand slam. That was followed by a two-run shot by Teddy Hoffman.
McElreath finished the night with four hits: two homers and two doubles, with three runs scored and six total runs batted in.
The second inning also included a string of three straight doubles, by Rayne Richard, Dakota Brewton and Blake Wellmann.
Wellmann (7-0) was the Cubs’ winning pitcher, going four shutout innings with five strikeouts and yielding just two hits. He helped himself out at the plate, with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Dylan Lester closed out the game with a scoreless fifth-inning.
Brewton finished with three hits on the night, including his sixth home run of the season.
