AUSTIN POLICE SHOOT AND KILL SUSPECTED GUNMAN IN DOWNTOWN AUSTIN

A gunman who was targeting three buildings in the downtown Austin area is dead after a police standoff.

The active shooter calls came in around 2:25 am this morning

Police closed Interstate 35 in both directions around the shooting area for hours, reopening it around 6:40am.

The unidentified gunman, who police believe to be about 50 years old with a criminal history, targeted the Mexican Consulate, the U.S. Federal Courthouse, and the Austin Police headquarters before being shot and killed, according to authorities.

It was not immediately known whether the gunman was shot by police or by his own hand.

Assistant Police Chief Raul Munguia says that the suspected shooter was killed near his vehicle, a white SUV, and was wearing a type of vest that Munguia says that is possible that the suspect’s vehicle may have contained an improvised explosive device.

Austin Police have dispatched SWAT units to the suspect’s home to search for possible explosives in the home.
