BUC BASEBALL SWEEPS PHILLIPS COLLEGE, 4-1 AND 15-6

Daniel Anciso has two home runs and brings in seven in second game to seal sweep

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College baseball had solid pitching in the first game and plenty of offensive support in the second game to earn a sweep of Frank Phillips College by the scores of 4-1 and 15-6 Saturday afternoon at Leroy Dreyer Field.

With the sweep, Blinn improves its record to 2-1 during the first weekend of the season.

“I was just proud of the guys for hanging in there after a toss loss yesterday,” said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn head coach.

Three Blinn pitchers combined to strike out 13 Frank Phillips batters and the offense did its job to help the Buccaneers take the opener of the doubleheader 4-1.

Andrew Morgan got the start and pitched four shutout innings and struck out seven. Garrett Alexander came on to pitch an inning and struck out two to get the save and Will Floyd cleaned up the two innings of middle relief and struck out four.

Marshall Skinner hit a home run for the second consecutive game and drove in two of the four runs. Jay Anderson had an RBI and a single and Sam McElreath had two singles and drove in a run. Johnny Rizer had the only other extra-base hit with a double.

Blinn got it started on offense in the second inning when Anthony Jones drew a one-out walk and later came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Anderson for a 1-0 lead. Skinner helped add to the lead in the third when he followed a walk by Colton Parrish with a home run to left for a 3-0 lead.

Frank Phillips scored one run in the fifth but Blinn countered right back. Angel De La Fuente walked to begin the inning and came in to score on an RBI single by McElreath to center for a 4-1 lead. That would be all the offense needed with the three Blinn pitchers cruising.

Daniel Anciso had himself a game in belting two home runs and driving in more runs by himself than the entire Frank Phillips team in a 15-6 victory for Blinn to secure the sweep of the doubleheader.

Anciso went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and a single while driving in seven for the victory. Rizer added a home run and a double and drove in three runs. Parrish, McElreath, Richard Bailey and Zach Cherry each had an RBI in the lopsided victory.

Cody Moss got the start and pitched six innings in the no decision but struck out 10 and gave up five earned runs. Cody LeCompte came on and pitched one scoreless inning and earned the victory. Sammy Pleus and Cody Collins each pitched a scoreless inning on the mound.

Anciso got started early as Anderson and Parrish walked and Rizer reached on a fielder’s choice and then Anciso ripped a grand slam to left-center to give Blinn a 4-0 lead after an inning. That lead disappeared after Frank Phillips scored four runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4.

Anciso took it upon himself to get the lead back with a solo home run to begin the fourth to give Blinn a 5-4 lead. Rizer added a solo home run of his own in the fifth inning for a 6-4 lead. Anciso drove in his sixth run with a double to left for a 7-4 lead.

Koby Collins and Trent Murphy started the sixth inning with walks and both scored on an Rizer double to right for a 9-4 advantage. Parrish kept the scoring going with an RBI single in the infield for the 10th run. Anciso brought in another run on a line drive to center to make the score 11-4.

McElreath added to the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single to center for the 12th run and then De La Fuente came in to score for a 13-4 lead. Bailey brought in the final run of the seven-run inning with a ground out to give Blinn a 14-4 lead after six innings. Frank Phillips scored two runs in the seventh to avoid the run rule and get within 14-6 of Blinn.

Blinn capped the scoring in the eighth inning when Dylan Bohnert doubled to begin the inning and later came in to score on a RBI single by Cherry to right for a 15-6 lead that would hold up until the final pitch.

Blinn will hit the road on Tuesday, Feb. 7 to face Angelina College at 4 p.m.
