Buccaneers complete perfect day with sweeps over Frank Phillips and Temple

The Buccaneers hold a 2-0 record at the Blinn Tournament after picking up six straight sets

BRENHAM, Texas – Blinn College volleyball picked up its 20th victory of the season after a perfect day of sweeping Frank Phillips College and Temple College on Friday in the P.E. Building to open the Blinn Tournament.
“Each set we were coming out aggressive and it is always nice to string points together early,” said Kalie Mader, Blinn head coach. “I thought they played well together as a team, and moved well and in sync, so I was happy with that.”

Blinn 3 – Frank Phillips 0
The Buccaneers claimed their first sweep of the day after taking down Frank Phillips by the score of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-17.
Paola Marie Salas Adorno led the offense with 12 kills, while Kayla Valigura followed with 10 and Amina Olajuwon with six. Darian Ibarra led the Buccaneers with three aces, while Samantha Boatman followed with two.
The Buccaneers were dominant in their first set against Frank Phillips, taking a 19-6 lead after Adorno chimed in with four kills. The Buccaneers continued to dominate as Olajuwon and Claire Chapman each came up with kills to extend the Buccaneers lead to 22-8. Valigura jumped in with the final attack of the set for the Buccaneers to move ahead in the match 1-0.
In the second set, the Buccaneers grabbed a 7-4 lead as the defense worked hard with Valigura recording three blocks. Frank Phillips came into the game after inching behind Blinn 11-9 until Roxanne Morris led the Buccaneers to a 17-13 lead with two kills. The Buccaneers scored the next six points as Chapman and Adorno combined for three kills and Samantha Boatman served two aces for the win.
The Buccaneers claimed the sweep after kicking off the third set with a 15-8 lead propelled by Darian Ibarra served three aces. The Buccaneers held onto the lead for the rest of the match and the final blow came in the form of a block by Chapman.

Blinn 3 – Temple 0
The Buccaneers swept Temple for the second time this season by the score of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-17.
Chapman led the offense with 13 kills, while Adorno followed with 11 and Olajuwon with nine.
The Buccaneers came out swinging in the first set against Temple to take an early 18-6 lead as Adorno and Chapman combined for nine kills to pave the way. Blinn maintained a big lead the rest of the set before finishing Temple with back-to-back kills by Morris and Mikayla Adam.
The Buccaneers rode the wave of momentum into the second set as they took a 10-4 lead. However, Temple fought back to even the score 13-13 and eventually take a 16-14 lead over Blinn. The Buccaneers went on a 9-4 run led by Chapman with four kills to take the set and move ahead in the match 2-0.
Blinn pulled away early once again in the third set as the Buccaneers took off with a 12-5 lead. Temple narrowed in on the Buccaneers 14-12, but a rally sparked by Olajuwon allowed to pull ahead 24-16. Olajuwon finished Temple off with a kill for the Buccaneers to claim their second sweep of the day and move their tournament record to 2-0.
“We had a lot of long rallies, so we are defending well,” said freshman libero Julia Fritz. “We are really excited to play Navarro tomorrow, so hopefully we can come out with another win.”
The Buccaneers now hold a 20-4 overall record and 6-0 conference record.
The Buccaneers will close out the Blinn Tournament against No. 15 Navarro on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 3 p.m. in the P.E. Building.
“We are excited to play a ranked opponent and see what we can contribute to that match,” Mader said. “We are excited to work hard tomorrow.”
