CITY PLANS CHANGES TO ANIMAL ORDINANCES

Jeana Bellinger
City Secretary - Jeana Bellinger

City Secretary Jeana Bellinger gave the City Council an overview of the proposed changes coming to the animal ordinances for the city of Brenham.  The ordinances were last revised in 1998.  She and her staff have been working on the re-write for the past 2 years and it is expected to go before the council for approval in August.

Bellinger stated that 90 percent of the current ordinances are being changed.  The new ordinances will cover not only dogs and cats, but also exotic animals, livestock and bees.  It will contain 8 different sections and include regulations on carrying animals in open truck beds and in hot vehicles.  The current limitations on the number of livestock per property will likely change along with the addition of a grazing acreage requirement. Exemptions will still be available for 4-H and FFA projects.  Few specifics were given during the meeting, only a broad outline of the proposed changes.  That outline can be viewed here: Proposed Animal Ordinance Changes

  1. I sure hope there is a more clear and percise order on dog tethering . There are dogs living 24/7 tied up with very little walk room are shelter from weather. They live and eat in a small area with their fesus and urine. That is no life for any living breathing being.

  2. These ordinances are for the good and safety of all (people and pets). I hope to see an ordinance that prohibits dogs from being chained or tied in a yard verses being in an enclosed yard or kennel. If someone does not have an enclosed yard, they should not have the pet. This is not the same as taking your dog for a walk; some of these pets live their lives chained in the front yard.
