CUB FOOTBALL STANDOUTS INDUCTED AT HALL OF HONOR CEREMONY

Three former Brenham Cub football standouts were inducted to the Football Hall of Honor at a luncheon today (Friday) at Blinn College.  The 1999 Cub football team was also honored.  The 1999 Brenham Cubs went a perfect 10-0 through the regular season, but lost 29-28 in their bi-district game against Jacksonville.  The three Cub players inducted were Elvis McBride, JJ Kelly, and Mathus Gill.

Elvis McBride was a running back on the 1979 team and led the team in rushing yardage. He also won the state championship 300 meter hurdles in 1980. He had a distinguished career in the military and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  McBride talked about how prayer played a part in his success:

JJ Kelly was a member of the 1993 Cubs and was a two-time all-district offensive and defensive selection.  He went on to play for the Texas Longhorns and helped them win the Big 12 championship.  He is currently serving in the U.S. Navy.  He talked about his mother, Lela Kelly, who died in May, and how she taught him to be tough:

Mathus Gill was a member of the 1999 Cubs.  He holds the school record for yards gained rushing in a single season with 1,958 yards.  He had 5 games in 1999 that he ran for over 200 yards.  He currently coaches in the Katy School District.  He talked about how lessons learned in football have helped him in his life:

Members of the 1999 team as well as the 3 new inductees will be  recognized at tonight’s (Fridays) Brenham Cub football game.
