CUBETTES EARN EXTRA-INNING WIN OVER STRATFORD

The Brenham Cubettes softball team needed a win and got one, but had to work a little overtime to get it.

The Cubettes (12-8/6-4) downed Stratford (7-3), 6-5 in eight innings, Monday night at Stratford.

The game had been postponed Friday night due to weather.

The Cubettes were looking good going into the bottom of the seventh, leading 4-1.  However, the Lady Spartans rallied for three runs to send the game into extra innings.

With two outs and a runner on first, Brenham shortstop Brette Kohring lined a two-run home over the left field fence, giving the Cubettes a 6-4 lead.

Stratford once again rallied, with a run in the bottom of the eighth, and runners at second and third, when pitcher Colleen Bentke got the hitter to pop out.

The game was scoreless going into the top of the fourth inning, when Brenham took the lead on Reagan Kwiatkowski’s two-out double that scored Hannah Schwartz.  Schwartz was running for Ashley Hodde, who had doubled with one out.

The Cubettes took a 2-0 lead on Benkte’s rbi-double in the fifth.

With the Brenham lead cut to 2-1, Shae Harris ripped a two-run pinch hit home run in the sixth inning.

The win came at a crucial time for the Cubettes, who’d dropped their last two games by a combined score of 16-to-1.  It also exacted some revenge for a 3-1, 8-inning win by Stratford at Alumni Field earlier this year.

The Cubettes turn right around and hit the road again Tuesday, as they travel to Magnolia to face the Lady Bulldogs.  First pitch is at 6:45 with the pre-game show on KWHI and www.kwhi.com at 6:25.
