Eighteen Blinn student-athletes earn NJCAA academic honors

Seven earn Pinnacle Award for perfect 4.0 grade point average

The NJCAA has recognized 18 Blinn College student-athletes for academic achievement, matching the College’s highest total in the past decade.

“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes and how they have represented the Blinn College athletic program in the classroom,” said Scott Schumacher, athletic director.

Honoring academic performance throughout each individual’s collegiate career, there are three classifications of the NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Awards based on cumulative grade point average (GPA) qualifications.

Seven student-athletes from Blinn earned the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence with a perfect 4.0 GPA: softball players Alyssa Hitt (Kingwood), Ashley Langston (Manvel), Kalli Edwards (Vidor), Katie Andrie (China Spring) and Lauren Silver (Corpus Christi); and volleyball players Barbara Krug (Brazil) and Danusia Sipa Borgeaud (Australia).

The Superior Academic Achievement Award goes to athletes with a GPA between 3.8 and 3.99 and Blinn had four named to that list. Baseball players Blaine Suehs (Caldwell) and Cody LeCompte (Cypress); volleyball player Ally Lanik (Richmond); and softball player Sam Junkin (Leander).

The Exemplary Academic Achievement Award goes to athletes with a GPA between 3.6 and 3.79 and Blinn had seven student-athletes named to that list. Softball players Courtney White (Richmond), Jordin Wilkins (Katy) and Seeley Orsak (Katy); baseball players Dillon Turney (Fort Bend) and George Pappas (Houston); basketball player Gabriella Odom (Houston); and volleyball player MeKayla Gurley (Tulsa, Okla.).

The current record-keeping database for the NJCAA goes back to 2005-06 and the 18 athletes named this year is the most-ever for Blinn. The previous high for Blinn was seven student-athletes named in 2014-15 and 2010-11.

Blinn softball with a team GPA of 3.51 and volleyball with a team GPA of 3.09 each earned honorable mention in the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Awards.
