A former DPS trooper who arrested Sandra Bland in Waller County last summer, has pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on a charge of perjury.

Bryan Encinia is accused lying about the details of his arrest of Bland near the Prairie View A&M campus.

In January, a grand jury indicted him on perjury charges. If convicted, Encinia faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Earlier this month, Encinia was formally fired by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

His next court appearance is scheduled for May 17th.
