Third and fourth grade students at Alton Elementary School were presented with the drug awareness bracelets. Red Ribbon Day is a national drug awareness program event held annually. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon Campaign has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.

Lions Clubs that participated in the Red Ribbon Day included the Washington County Ladies Lions Club, Brenham Evening Lions Club, and Brenham Noon Lions Club.
