LOCAL STUDENTS AMONG 78 TO RECEIVE HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO SCHOLARSHIPS
Students, parents and Show representatives traveled from 68 Texas counties to celebrate the accomplishments of 78 students and award more than $1.4 million in scholarships at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Area Go Texan scholarship banquet.
Kaley Markos, of Brenham, Steel Choate of Grimes County, Deanna Hairrell of Burleson County, and Lois-Anna Voelkel of Austin County among the local students receiving the awards
“While the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo draws international attention, the organization’s main focus is here, in Texas,” said Joel Cowley, president and CEO of the Show. “The Show’s educational commitment of more than $24 million for 2015 is evidence that we believe in our youth and the future of our great state.”
The 78 Area Go Texan scholarship recipients are from 68 different counties surrounding the Houston metropolitan area. Each student received a four-year, $18,000 scholarship, for a total of $1,404,000. Each of the 68 participating Area Go Texan counties awards a scholarship to one of the county’s graduating high school seniors. An additional 10 awards are given at large to eligible students within these counties.
Scholarships are awarded to students who meet the program requirements as well as demonstrate academic potential, leadership and financial need. All recipients also must attend a Texas college or university.
These scholarships represent just a portion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment of more than $24 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, School Art participants and other educational programs.
