ONE PERSON KILLED IN SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT

One person was killed on Sunday six miles west of Brenham after driving off into a median.

According to DPS Trooper Jimmy Morgan, the Department of Public Safety and  the Brenham Fire Department responded to US HWY 290 and Old Burton RD around 6:45pm for a traffic accident with entrapment.

BFD arrived and found a small SUV in the median with one person trapped inside.

According to the DPS, the driver, sixty-four-year old Stephenie Esther Shapiro, of Houston, was traveling eastbound on 290, six miles west of Brenham. The reports say that Shapiro was traveling in the outer lane, and for an unknown reason, changed in the center lane and continued on into the median where she crashed her vehicle.

Fire Department units used extrication equipment to free Shapiro, who was taken by the Washington County EMS to Scott and White Hospital in Brenham and then sent by helicopter to St. Joseph’s in Bryan where she died.

According to reports, Shapiro was wearing a seatbelt.

    1. I was driving my granddaughter home to brenham and saw mrs. Shapiro’s vehicle flipping and pieces flying off. I was immediately moved with emotion. On my way home, I saw her car along with the emergency response team.
I looked the accident up today to see if they were ok. My heart is broken for her family.

      1. Steph was a friend and colleague. Without question, she was one of the strongest, kindest, most energetic, and dynamic people I’ve ever met. Her capacity to care about other people – friends, family, and strangers – was remarkable. Mr. Bernard, thanks for caring enough about her to find out what happened. She was the kind of person who would have continued to think about such a thing as well.

      2. Mr. Bernard,

I am Stephenie’s niece. I was wondering since you saw the accident if there is anything else you saw or noticed that you would be able to tell me. If so, please let me know.
