WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE REPORT A LOOSE ALLIGATOR IN THE COUNTY

The Washington County Sheriff’s office is warning of a loose alligator, last reported on Pleasant School road on Monday.

Deputies have notified the local game warden, but it disappeared before it could be captured.

The Sheriff’s office warns that if you see this alligator, do not approach it, and instead call the game warden or the sheriff’s office.

  1. If people leave the thing alone, it should not be a problem, it’s when people decide they want to pick on the poor critter that things go bad and the alligator is blamed for the stupidity of the human! I think it’s neat that we have such diverse wildlife in our area. Just keep an eye on your small pets!

  2. I hear this gator has been living in this area for 5+ years. There are 3 stock ponds in the area and he/she moves between the 3 of them.

  3. I want to know where did it come from and who is responsible for letting it get away and why is it in our county.

    1. Aligators exist in the wild in our area. My husband is aware of at least two known gators at any given time around our area. Doubtful someone randomly “(let) it get away”. With the water levels at their current state it wouldn’t be unusual for them to be displaced. Leave him alone and call the Game Warden. They’ll get him (or her) back home! Isn’t it great to live in a place with such wildlife diversity?!!

    2. Bill, they travel just like any other reptile. My uncle had one in his pond in Kaufman, TX. Very remote area and there were no people for miles around him. How did it get there?

    3. Bill,

Rivers and creeks are swollen. And it’s mating season. Animals, including alligators, will move around looking for a suitable mate. And I don’t think any one person is responsible for letting it get away. It’s an alligator; have you ever tried to catch one? They can get away pretty fast. And you may be braver than I, but I’m definitely not running after it.
