BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBER KENJURA SAYS MORE TIME IS NEEDED TO MAKE IMPROVEMENTS

Blinn Board of Trustee member Atwood Kenjura says that he is not upset about not being able to vote at a Tuesday night meeting that rejected State Representative John Raney’s bill compromise plan on the state oversight of Blinn funding.

The vote was 3 to three, causing the measure to fail.

Kenjura tells Brenham Banner Press that he did not have a problem with the early vote being taken or with Borchardt’s actions, but still has questions about the proposed modification to Raney’s bill, which would require the allocation of monies dependent on student contact hours.

Kenjura said it is board chairman Douglas Borchardt’s “prerogative” on whether to hold another vote. Borchardt voted against accepting the modifications.

“Both sides are correct,” Kenjura said. “That’s why the board was completely divided. “I agree that the board members had ample time to discuss it, and they voted.”

The Brenham campus gets it revenue is property tax, which produced only $1.6 million dollars this year, and when the Board attempted raise the tax rate by three cents, they were met with a successful rollback election.

Kenjura says that the issues being raised by Raney would be met if the Board was given more time.

Kenjura says that Blinn is now ready to move forward with the issuance of bonds for the new Bryan campus, and that this shows the college’s commitment to get things right financially.
