GOV. ABBOTT ANNOUNCES SCHOOL SAFETY PLAN

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has unveiled his plan to improve school safety in the aftermath of the deadly shooting at Santa Fe High School earlier this month.

Governor Greg Abbott

Abbott unveiled his 40 page school security action plan this (Wednesday) morning at a news conference in Dallas.

The plan includes $120 million in immediate funding for schools, along with measures to train armed school marshals at no cost to the schools.

It also includes the creation of a grant program to fund collaborative agreements with local law enforcement and added federal funding for campus security.

Abbott also suggests the need to install active shooter alarms that function separate from other emergency alarms.

Abbott also announced a $20 million initiative to fund the statewide expansion of a mental health program administered by Texas Tech.

The governor continued to strongly support gun rights, but acknowledged the need for some changes.  The plan also details the need for laws that regulate what Abbott called "responsible gun ownership."   That includes measures to report stolen firearms.

Abbott also pledged to spend nearly a million dollars on gun locks to give away in an effort to promote safe storage of firearms.
