LIFETIME LEARNING CHOOSES BOOK FOR ‘COUNTY READ’
Lifetime Learning has announced its Fall Program Series for 2018.
This announcement includes the Washington County READ, which is celebrating its 10th year. “
The book selected for this year’s READ is The Train To Crystal City, written by Texas author Jan Jarboe Russell.
The book tells the story of an American internment camp in Texas during World War II, where thousands of families - many US citizens - were incarcerated. Russell focuses her story on two American-born teenage girls who were interned, uncovering the details of their years spent in the camp.
The first program of the Fall series will be a luncheon and lecture, Friday, September 14th at the Blinn Student Center. The program is titled, “Enemy Aliens in WWII: Remembering the Internment Camp Experience in Texas.” Lila Rakoczy, PhD, will be the featured speaker.
The luncheon and lecture will be held from 11:30-to-1:00 at the Blinn Student Center.
On October 17, a free reception will be held at the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library from 2:00-to-4:0 0pm. The featured guest will be Wes Wesselhoff, Colonel US Air Force – Retired. As a child, he was a resident at the Crystal City Internment Camp.

The Washington County READ will be held Thursday, October 18th, at Unity Theatre. They will provide a dramatic reading from the book, and there will be an opportunity to meet the author, Jan Jarboe Russell. S he will provide comments on her research and other books that she has written. The event is free to the community.
The final program of the Fall series will be a luncheon and lecture on Friday, December 7th at the Blinn Student Center. The program is titled, “Presidents and Their Generals”, with featured author and speaker Matthew Moten, Colonel, US Army – Retired. Colonel Moten is the author of Presidents and Their Generals: The Pershing Paradox.
