PLANS OUTLINED TO IMPROVE BRENHAM CLOVERLEAF

The Texas Transportation Commission has approved projects that will improve the cloverleaf interchange in Brenham, and widen Highway 6 to three lanes in certain areas in Brazos County.

On Thursday, the Commission approved the 2019 Unified Transportation Plan.  According to Bob Colwell, Public Information Officer of TxDOT’s Bryan District Office, the plan is the department’s expected transportation funding that will be available through the next ten years.  He says projects are prioritized and included in the plan for how to best use the expected funds.

Colwell says a project is in the plan to "upgrade traffic flow through the interchange of State Highway 36 and US Highway 290", for approximately $50 million.

The plan lists the improvements taking place from 0.2 miles north to 0.2 miles south of Highway 290.  He also says work on the cloverleaf is projected to begin in 2025, but a contractor has not been decided on at this point.

TxDOT will go through the normal project development process to outline what will be constructed to meet traffic needs.  Colwell says that process has yet to begin.

Projects are also in the works to begin a two-stage lane widening project for highways in Brazos County.

The first stage is from Highway 21 to the Texas Avenue interchange, which will start around September 2021.  It is expected to cost $174 million.  The second stage would be from the interchange south to Highway 40, expected to begin around September 2024 and cost $42 million.

Colwell says the office is still in early stages of development, and will hold public meetings to receive feedback from citizens.  They will work on the project alongside the Bryan/College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization.
