FORMER WASHINGTON CO. JAILER RELEASED FROM JAIL AFTER FINISHING SENTENCE

A former Washington County jailer has been released from jail, after serving a sentence for official oppression.

Christopher Kulow was released on Monday, per Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak.

Kulow was convicted of a Class A misdemeanor by a Brenham jury in August 2015, after an incident two years earlier involving a restrained inmate.

Surveillance video evidence showed Kulow beating the inmate, Gregory Webb, who was strapped to a chair after reportedly being disruptive in a solitary confinement cell.

Judge Carson Campbell sentenced Kulow to one year in jail, in 2015.  He was released on bond, after appealing his conviction.  His appeal was denied by the Court of Appeals, and his request for review denied by the Court of Criminal Appeals.

Kulow would file a Writ of Habeas Corpus with the District Court, requesting relief.  He stated Sheriff Hanak was unfairly denying his early release, saying other inmates had been given “good time” credit, but he had not.  Judge Campbell denied the request, at a hearing on June 1st.

Kulow then appealed the denial to the Court of Appeals, which held on October 16th that the District Judge acted within its discretion in denying the claim.

Kulow served his sentence in the Burleson County Jail, due to safety concerns.

  1. This is a good guy that let the stress of dealing with thugs get to him. He has learned his lesson and should be able to enter society with open arms waiting for him. I would stand with him anywhere.
