JUNETEENTH PARADE MARCHES THROUGH DOWNTOWN BRENHAM

  

Dozens of floats, trail riders, and baton twirlers made their way through downtown Brenham Saturday morning in celebration of Juneteenth.

Local organizations, schools, churches, Brenham and Washington County officials, and businesses came out in honor of the holiday.  Of course, there was lots of candy thrown, along with some ice pops and cool drinks to beat the summer heat.

This year’s royalty included Junior King and Queen Camren Wright and Amaya McGinty; Senior King and Queen Chaz Couttee and BreAsia McWilliams; Intermediated King and Queen Nyles Wilson and Ja’Niya Lewis; Princess Skylar Hull; Baby Royalty Xavier Taylor; and Baby Boy and Girl of the Year DeMauri Glover and Madison Walker.

Celebrations continued Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Fireman’s Park, with DJ Keith Cooper.

The annual celebration began June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers told enslaved African Americans in Galveston that the Civil War had ended and they were free.
