The superintendent of Brenham ISD has announced he will be parting ways with the district.

Dr. Walter Jackson
(Brenham ISD)

Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson was named the lone finalist to be the superintendent of La Porte ISD, after a special meeting of the La Porte ISD Board of Trustees today (Tuesday).  By law, the board must wait 21 days, until June 3rd, before voting to hire him as the new superintendent.

Dr. Jackson began his duties in Brenham just over five years ago on April 20, 2015, after previously serving in Alief ISD.  Dr. Jackson succeeded superintendent Sam Bell, who stepped down in October of 2014.  In 2019, he was named Region VI Superintendent of the Year.

Dr. Jackson said in a release that it has been “an honor and a privilege” for him and his family to have served as members of the Brenham community and school district.  He offered his thanks and appreciation to the Brenham ISD Board of Trustees for believing in and supporting his leadership, saying together they “accomplished many significant achievements” for students.

Board President Natalie Lange congratulated Dr. Jackson and his family, saying his leadership and high expectations moved Brenham ISD to “a higher level of performance”.  She said his impact in the community will be missed, but she is confident that the district, campus, and classroom leadership will “continue the important work and growth to build a legacy of excellence”.

Dr. Jackson’s contract with the district was most recently extended in January of 2019 through June 30, 2024.  His total compensation package for the 2019-20 school year was $194,166.

According to the release, Dr. Jackson will work with the Brenham School Board to ensure a smooth transition while the district begins its search for a new superintendent.  The school board met this evening to begin discussing the transition and next steps for the superintendent search.  No action was taken at the meeting.

  1. I am sad to say, but I think it is time for a change. Standardized test scores across the district have not risen, teacher morale remains low, turnover remains high, and teacher pay has not been impacted in a good way. Further, if you go look at our campus locations, the exterior upkeep is lacking and it does not appear that we are doing a good job taking care of our schools. As the spouse of a retired educator who worked during the Jackson regime, it was not a great experience, I wish him and LaPorte the best, but I will not mourn his leaving.

  2. Congratulations Dr
Jackson on being named the lone finalist for the Superintendent position at LaPorte ISD.The impact that you have made on the Brenham ISD and the Brenham comminity will be greatly missed. You were a Superintendent for all people. We wish the best in LaPorte and know you will do an excellant job.

  3. That’s what happens when people use Brenham as a stepping stone on their resume.
Hire local talent and they will stay.

    1. Where do you think “local talent” have gone? To other places because Brenham ISD is too cheap to give competitive wages.
