WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS PASS “NO THRU TRUCK” ORDER FOR SEVERAL PRECINCT ONE ROADS

Several Washington County roads in Precinct One are being closed to large truck loads.

After a public hearing at their meeting Tuesday morning, Washington County Commissioners unanimously approved an order designating and installing no thru truck signs on Pickens Road from Mt. Falls School Road to Bluff Road, Sweed Road from Highway 105 to Conner Road, Hidalgo Falls Road from Mt. Falls School Road to Pickens Road, and Gaskamp Road from Highway 105 to William Penn Road.

According to County Judge John Durrenberger, there is a very active large sand pit at the end of Mt. Falls School Road where it connects with Hidalgo Falls Road.  Durrenberger said this order is meant to cut down on the number of roads that need constant repairs as a result of the frequent truck traffic in and out of the sand pit.

Durrenberger added he has been in contact with the operators of the sand pit, and said they are “very much in agreement with these regulations”.

Commissioner Don Koester said by doing this, trucks will have one entrance and exit from the sand pit going down Mt. Falls School Road and Pickens Road back to Highway 105.  He said this will help save county roads and “keep them in a lot better shape than they are now”.

According to County Engineer Ross McCall, the county has spent over $150,000 on these four roads just over the last couple of years.

Commissioner Kirk Hanath said he was concerned that mail and delivery trucks will not be able to go through these roads, although they can deliver to homes on these roads.  He said a policy like this may not be suitable for some parts of the county, and could be “quite a logistical challenge”.  Commissioner Joy Fuchs said the county typically does not like to put restrictions on county roads, but admitted in some cases there is a need for them.

  1. Does the owner of the sand pit contribute money to the upkeep of the county roads? Those roads enable him to reap a profit while spreading dust, noise, and inconvenience to the local residents.

  2. Would be nice if the ‘city’ would consider the “no thru trucks” for Chappell Hill street. Since this street is open from 290 and goes all the way to 105, all sorts of big trucks use it as a cut through. Could bet you that more trucks use this street than Blue Bell road (577).

    1. I live on Jackson St. Brenham Wholesale trucks fly up and down Jackson St. to College St. Brenham Wholesale should have enough respect for homeowners to take West Main St. route to Jackson St. If the mayor or city council members, or city planners, lived on Jackson St. or just would think a little about the citizens, they would know this.

    2. How true. Chappell Hill Street gives trucks a straight shot to 105….then to 36 N. When S.Chappell Hill opened to 290 E&W it is now Grand Central Expressway all hours. South Chappell Hill is primarily RESIDENTIAL. Where is the Commissioner that oversees this Precinct? I doubt she/he ever drives it. Do not have a clue who it is. You don’t need to travel it just park at a major 4-way Stop at Pecan & S.Chappell Hill & you will see a good example of trucks & cars. City police needs to monitor the drivers that fail to Stop & many, many drivers that speed especially from that corner to the next Stop. That is also a School zone as well. Limit signs need placing between that area. Yes too many big trucks & noise day & nite. SCH should have never been opened to 290 E& W ….

  3. Why can’t this be done in other parts of the county? For years Muery Rd has been used by truck as detour route around the Railroad tunnel on FM 390 in Gay Hill. Now those trucks have started using Gilmore Rd also. One of those trucks is going to have a horrible accident at Highway 36N one day because of the short sight distance at the stop sign, and not to mention the dust caused by them. Mr. Hanath talks about the delivery trucks not getting to residents, but apparently he is not able to understand the second word on a NO THRU TRUCKS sign means.

  4. THE ROAD AND BRIDGE DEPARTMENT PUT LOAD LIMIT SIGNS UP ON RANDERMANN RD OFF 2621 WHEN I WAS STILL PULLING THE CEMENT WAGON, BUT DIDNT PUT THEM ON THE EAST BRIDGE ON RANDERMANN RD. ITS ALL A NAME GAME. BUT WHAT THE WASHINGTON COUNTY COMMISSIONER COURT DONT REALIZE IF YOU HAVE AN OVERWEIGHT PERMIT FOR THAT COUNTY THERE ISNT NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT, EXCEPT LAY UP IN THE AIR CONDITIONING AND TALK ABOUT. THE COMMISSIONERS FOR PRECINT ONE AND TWO, YEAH BOTH OF THEM FROM THE NEW SCHOOL. IT WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER DAVID SIMPSON, HE USED TO TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS.

  5. It is a nice gesture, but how will the county enforce it?
Will a Deputy be waiting all day at of these intersections?
There are a good amount of truckers who will take the shortest route, regardless of a sign.
Just saying, sounds like a non issue.
William Penn is a great short cut, besides all the blind spots and hills.

  6. Certainly good to hear there will be an effort made to stop the destruction of county roads In this particular area which stay in a perpetual state of disrepair. And that the entire commissioners court is taking efforts to get it accomplished. An election year with qualified opposition can work miracles. Good fortune for the residents in this area of precinct one.

    1. Wow why did Gaskamp rd get it. It does not go sand pit are the feed lot that is on mt falls rd buddy buddy way to go
