TWO ACTIVE COVID-19 CASES IN BRENHAM ISD AFTER CASE CONFIRMED IN BRENHAM MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT

EIGHT TOTAL CASES REPORTED BY BRENHAM ISD

A third student at Brenham Middle School has tested positive for COVID-19, one of two cases currently active within Brenham ISD.

According to Brenham ISD COVID-19 Response Leader Jamie Woodall, the district was notified Monday of the positive case.  The affected student was last on campus October 15th.

According to Woodall, no instances of close contact with the student were identified, so the student will be the only one required to quarantine.  She said this positive case, from the district’s understanding, had more to do with interaction with family members than with students or staff members.

Woodall said none of the three confirmed cases at Brenham Middle School are related to one another.  The only other active case within the district is expected to be back on campus late this week or early next week.

Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 cannot return to school until ten days after symptoms have begun and 24 hours after fever and symptoms have resolved.  Anyone found to have close contact with someone who tested positive will be notified by phone, and will be required to remain off campus for 14 days.

Woodall said the district’s COVID-19 Response Team still meets weekly to discuss the number of cases across the district, and district administrators work regularly with Washington County Health Authority Dr. William Loesch to determine if anything needs to be changed with the district’s coronavirus response and prevention plan.  She said the district still feels very confident in what it is doing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

The district has confirmed eight total cases of COVID-19—five in students and three in staff members—since September 22nd, when it reported its first case in a Brenham High School student.

  1. Brenham ISD’s student+faculty cumulative case rate at 0.14% (8/5622) is still well below the state’s student+faculty cumulative rate of 0.55% (16,173/2,936,847). I think this is due to the exhaustive mitigation procedures (plexiglass at lunch tables and other) Brenham ISD has implemented. Achieving a result 4X better than the state average is not by coincidence or luck. I am a parent and have no affiliation with the district. It seems BISD gets a fair amount of criticism on this KWHI comment board. So, I think it’s appropriate to point out the positives as well. Keep up the good work BISD!
