BURTON CITY COUNCIL PROPOSES TAX RATE

The Burton City Council proposed a new property tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year at its meeting Tuesday.

The council is seeking to adopt a rate of $0.4246 per $100 valuation, almost 8 cents below 2020’s rate of $0.5000 per $100.

Citizens will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed rate at a public hearing on Tuesday, September 28th at 5:30 p.m.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council moved to change the Burton Municipal Court to an inactive status and accepted the resignation of Angela Harrington as Burton Municipal Judge effective October 1st.  The council opted to change the status of the municipal court, rather than removing it, so that if needed, it can be brought back more easily.

The council then declined to renew a subscription to the annual FastCourt municipal court software from FundView, citing the now-inactive municipal court.

Also in session, the council:

  • Approved closing North Railroad Street (excluding the post office) from Texas Street to West Washington Street and from West Washington Street to Cedar Street, as well as Live Oak Street from Main Street to Railroad Street, on October 30th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for the Burton Trick or Treat Trail hosted by the Burton Chamber of Commerce.
  • Approved closing West Texas Street from Main Street to Railroad Street for the Toast & Smoke event sponsored by the Burton Beautification Committee on October 9th. The event will help raise funding for Weeren City Park.
  • Approved the construction of a building and car port at the back of a property located at 304 North Main Street.
  • Tabled action on lowering coverage and raising the deductible for law enforcement liability insurance, as well as adding insurance for real and personal property loss due to crime onto the employee insurance policy.
