More businesses look to be on the way for the Brenham Market Square development.

According to the website of the real estate company, Wehdem Group, at least five businesses are coming to the residential and commercial mixed-use project, located between Market Street and Highway 290.

Chick-fil-A was confirmed to be on the way during Tuesday’s Washington County Commissioners Court meeting.  The website shows Wendy’s, Hawthorn Suites, LaQuinta, and Academy Sports and Outdoors as businesses that appear to be joining the restaurant in the new development.

The 51-acre Market Square will include multi-family residential, commercial, retail, hospitality and restaurant properties.  Included within the project is the Villas at Market Square, a 170-unit multi-family development, and the Brenham Trails, a 49-unit apartment complex for seniors 55 and older.

A memorandum of understanding between the City of Brenham and Market Square was approved by the city council in March, laying the foundation for a Chapter 380 agreement to reimburse qualified infrastructure costs.  The council took no action on the agreement in July.

  1. The city and the county need to attractions 55+ living for folks that can pay fair market rent. Belle Towers,Bluffview Villas just to name 2. They r all based on income. Belle Towers has only 6 units that rent at market value. We worked hard to make sure we had good retirements and then when u go to these and other places we r told we make too much in retirement benefits. I know there is a need in our community for low income housing. There r approximately 7 residential areas that rent to low income seniors and families. I don’t know how many at market value rentals will be in the new 55+. I want to sell my house but my realtors is very concerned that I will sell fast and have no where to go because rental property is also scarce. Kruse Apts r outrageous and unaffordable.

  2. We need an Ulta or some kind of beauty shop for women really badly! I’m a makeup artist and I hate having to drive all the way out to get some products

    1. If you go to the Baker Katz website and look at the plans for that development with Hobby Lobby, it shows that Ulta is proposed over there!

  3. I would like to see an Aldi open here. Anything to combat the prices at our local grocery stores currently.

    1. Yes sir. Aldi’s is fantastic. They have all these deals. They own Trader Joe’s now, so they carry many of the same brands and quality from Joe’s, also, so many good products for cheap! Cheaper than Walmart, cheaper than HEB.
I love HEB, and do enjoy the Wally World, but Aldi’s would be a bonus for All of us, for sure.

      1. Aldi’s connection to Trader Joe’s – separate companies due to family split in the ’70s – has not changed.

  4. The best place in Brenham to get a hamburger has to be Dairy Bar I bet the city and county doesn’t give them any kind of incentive or tax break we all need to stand behind our already established businesses and the let the new comers earn their own stripes

  5. I am super stoked that Brenham is getting a CHICK FIL A! This will bring in more money for Brenham! I am also stoked that Brenham is growing and is giving us opportunities to spend our money in OUR town, not in CS or Houston area!

  6. Well I’m just happy my wife will have a chick fil a right here in town, instead of having to go BCS. I think it’s good for our economy and more job opportunities.

  7. A “Cracker Barrel” would be a huge asset to the city or the county. Home cooked meals, huge variety, open seven days a week, and decent prices !
Plenty of land along 290 to build one. It will be much easier to entice future industry and corporations, if there are places to eat and shop.

  8. Can we all just stop complaining about everything that doesn’t fit the “bubble” and enjoy that our town is growing, thus growing our economy and giving us all better options and opportunities?! I would love to see a Smoothie King or Jamba Juice come to town too. Or something equal.

Btw…didn’t everyone throw the same fit when Starbucks came in? And now it is constantly busy with lines around the building? And the complaints about the Baker Katz project…yet that parking lot is never empty or close to it unless everything is closed. Yeah. Lots of hot air but when things open, everyone will be grateful.

    1. Amen. We should be fortunate that Brenham continues to grow. So many small towns are dying and would love to be in our enviable position. Give thanks to all we have and what is to come.

    2. Instead of wanting a Smoothie King support your local Brenham Nutrition…they have excellent smoothies!

  9. Time to leave the town I grew up in to find me a small town that isn’t being encroached on by Houston!

    1. True! We moved to the outskirts of Round Top years ago because it was quiet and small. No more. Ready to move!

  10. We need more variety.. Not everyone likes the same things, which are offered at every fast food restaurant here: burgers, fries, & a drink.. We have no middle eastern cuisines. We can bring in more business with a Halal Guys, Abu Omar Halal, or even a halal supermarket.

  11. I suspect the closer in and more convenient development may cannibalize tenants from Baker Katz. What happens to all our tax dollars poured into infrastructure for Katz if competition and recession cripples them? City bureaucrats make poor entrepreneurs.

    1. Competition is good. Who cares if Baker Katz or Market Square isn’t as successful as they’d hoped? The land is now there, developed, and ready to go. Entrepreneurs had some help up front but took on market risks and they’ll sell it to end users at whatever price the market will bear, higher or lower than their expectations. What we locals want are the end users. We might fairly criticize the particulars of a deal, but all in all we are winning over the end users and those end users are keeping local dollars local and bringing in outside dollars and foot traffic. All of that is good. I just wish that HEB would get on with its expansion plans.

      1. “Competition is good.” So is the City of Brenham trying to attract another major grocery store so that competition could be tried?
Safeway and then Appletree pulled out two decades ago or more and you’re left with a town of 17,000 and two grocery stores. Large, open parcels of land for commercial real estate are limited to two or three within the city limits at present, and my guess is, those will be sold for home development.

  12. This sounds awesome. We don’t have to drive to Cypress or BCS to get Chick-Fil-A. No more road trips just to buy equipment for Little League at Academy…but wait a minute: who’s going to work there? It’s well-known in this community about businesses not being able to find help–much less GOOD help. So let’s bring in a few more franchises and create more ever-vacant job openings?

    1. So spot on, and More importantly, the poor labor market will not give good results of consistently good food or good service. Mediocre at times if we are lucky. So that projected tax income is a pipe dream. But, the in realty, it’s the statement of having a “ Chic fil a” that is the purpose for the taxpayer bankrolling an out of town, privately owned business.

      1. Funny way of telling people some of the local businesses are not paying well enough. You do realize that people don’t quit companies. They quit toxic work environments and poor pay.

        1. Yes ma’am. That is mostly true. Some people, an unfortunate increasingly amount, are not ready to work.
One needs to be hungry enough for the work. There are too many people who just can’t handle working all the time, until they get ahead.

  13. This should be thrilling news for the residents of Market Square whose homes backup to the shopping site. Before long they will get free lighting at night on the backside of their property. Shame that the zoning requirements were changed a while back.

    1. This already a problem around the football field and junior high. Lighting that is on 24/7 and is a nuisance. Then we practice every morning and turn on the stadium lights at 5:45.

  14. This is great for Brenham! So many new families are calling Brenham home and having so many options is a great benefit. And I no longer have to drive to BCS or Houston.

  15. Sorry, the city and county cannot make their latest tax payer funded boondoggle go away with diagrams and flash. Give the voters credit. Not wise to count on continued tax payer apathy any longer. The dedicated voters know what must be done to save this community from the political mismanagement of our local governments. Clean house.

    1. You do realize a percentage of the sales tax revenue is returned to the county? This is a good thing for everyone; we all benefit. A growing city needs these revenues to support sustaining our community.

      1. The city and Washington county better make new comers pay taxes instead of us that have been 20 years plus paying excessive high taxes. Washington county is robbing home owners and needs to end. The whole appraisal district needs to be investigated and revised. And, the so called comptroller that the tax district goes by needs to be revised has well. Need to stop the stealing money ring.

    2. Not happy till it’s what they moved away from. Next we will read about how unhappy they are about the increase in crime.

        1. Who knew that Chick fil a was what caused a rise in crime! Hmmm. I guess it is all those chicken living christians and children who are the REAL criminals. Makes sense now!
