LIMITS ON MATERIALS SLOWING PROGRESS ON PECAN GLEN ROAD IMPROVEMENTS, SAYS COUNTY ENGINEER

County Engineer Wesley Stolz discusses the progress of the Pecan Glen road upgrades with Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday.

Progress is being made on road improvements within the Pecan Glen subdivision in Washington County, although not as much as hoped for.

At Tuesday’s Washington County Commissioners meeting, the county approved the first payment application totaling $215,312 to Schrader Construction Company for upgrades in the Pecan Glen Road District.

County Engineer Wesley Stolz said while the project has been coming along well, the contractor is running into a problem the county and other companies are also facing: the limited availability of road construction materials.

Commissioner Kirk Hanath was worried that work would not be completed before the weather becomes too cold to properly complete road sealing.  Stolz said he is maintaining a positive outlook, but that Hanath’s concern was legitimate.

Once the roads are brought up to county specifications through these upgrades, they will eventually be taken in as county roads.  Hanath said this is important to keep in mind, because if they are not done correctly, the county will be “stuck” with them.

Stolz said aside from the material capability issues, he has been “very impressed” with how the project has come along, noting there has been good production and good communication with the contractor.

The county accepted the bid of Schrader Construction Company in July for $741,915.  The road upgrades are being funded with bond proceeds approved by Pecan Glen voters in May 2021.  Only people living inside the road district’s boundaries are paying the added tax to support the improvements.
