Today’s look is at U.S. Congressional District 10 and at Libertarian Bill Kelsey of Austin.  A flight instructor who has flown humanitarian missions in Africa and East Asia, Kelsey is a peace advocate who says he is fighting for ballot access for smaller political parties.  He is one of two challengers in a three-way race for Congressional District 10.

Kelsey strongly feels that the United States government does not have the right to choose friends and enemies for its citizens.  He wishes to scale back the country’s foreign intervention, including ending subsidies to outside governments and closing bases overseas.

Kelsey also seeks to simplify and eventually abolish the income tax.  In addition, he wishes to streamline the immigration process and make it easier to obtain worker permits and legal status.

Kelsey says his campaign is part of a greater effort to educate voters about the Libertarian platform and what it stands for.

The Congressional District 10 seat is currently held by Republican Michael McCaul, who was first elected in 2005.  McCaul is the former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.  Some of McCaul’s top issues are border security, promoting energy independence, property rights and election integrity.

McCaul is facing Kelsey and Democrat Linda Nuno, a California native and former Texas A&M student whose priorities include female reproductive rights, police accountability, improving the family court system, and upgrading healthcare and food access in rural communities.

KWHI has requested interviews with McCaul and Nuno, and is awaiting a response from them.

Early voting runs through Friday, with Election Day on Tuesday.
