KOLKHORST, KACAL BEGIN NEXT LEGISLATIVE SESSION

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst (R-Brenham) and State
Representative Kyle Kacal (R-College Station)

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and State Representative Kyle Kacal meet in Austin today (Tuesday) for the start of Texas’ 88th regular legislative session.

Lawmakers will vote on various pieces of legislation to be sent to Governor Greg Abbott for approval and made into law.  The session ends on May 29th.

Kolkhorst and Kacal share several priorities as they get started, one of those being infrastructure and making investments that can sustain in the long-term.  For Kacal, that means ensuring small communities have proper access to water.

Other hot topics include the electric grid, property tax relief, elections, border and school security, Child Protective Services reform and mental health resources.

Kolkhorst says dedicating sufficient funding to schools and staff will be critical.

Kolkhorst is also looking to address workforce shortages in nursing.

Kacal says this session should for the most part be back to normal as it pertains to COVID-19 restrictions, and he is looking forward to involving citizens throughout the legislative process.

Kolkhorst has served in the Senate since 2014, and previously was a State House Representative for District 13 for seven terms.  After redistricting, Senate District 18 represents Aransas, Austin, Burleson, Calhoun, DeWitt, Fayette, Fort Bend, Goliad, Gonzales, Grimes, Harris, Lavaca, Lee, Montgomery, Refugio, Victoria, Waller and Washington counties.

Kacal was first elected to House District 12 in 2012.  The new district map includes Brazos, Grimes, Madison, Robertson, Walker and Washington counties.

  1. Since Texas is last in the nation in mental health spending hope we see it addressed and not just give lip service to it. Some of our crime problems have a mental health component so lets get with it.
