State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and State Representative Kyle Kacal received the oaths of office on Tuesday, the start of the 88th Texas Legislature.

Kolkhorst has served Senate District 18 since 2014, and spent seven terms before that as State House Representative for District 13.  Kacal has represented House District 12 since 2012.

This legislative session is the first one this decade with new district alignments after redistricting.

Kolkhorst’s district now covers Aransas, Austin, Burleson, Calhoun, DeWitt, Fayette, Goliad, Gonzales, Grimes, Lavaca, Lee, Refugio, Victoria and Washington counties, as well as portions of Fort Bend, Harris, Montgomery and Waller counties.

Kacal is representing Washington County for the first time with the new district map, which also has Grimes, Madison, Robertson and Walker counties and rural Brazos County.

On Wednesday, the Senate drew 31 lots to determine which individual members would serve their current term for a two-year or four-year period, to ensure senators have staggered elections every two years.  Senators who drew odd numbers will serve a four-year term, while those who picked an even number will have a two-year term.  Kolkhorst picked an odd number, so she will serve a full term lasting until January 2027.

The 88th Legislature ends on May 29th
