WASHINGTON CO. JURY CONVICTS ON LESSER OFFENSE IN AGGRAVATED ASSAULT TRIAL

A man arrested and indicted for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon was found guilty by a Washington County jury this week on a lesser charge of misdemeanor Deadly Conduct.

28-year-old Hans Obenhoff of Arlington, Virginia was sentenced by agreement after the verdict to 174 days in the Washington County Jail and a fine of $750, with credit for 174 days already served.

Obenhoff was indicted in December 2021 for the second degree felony aggravated assault charge, originating from an incident that September in downtown Brenham where Obenhoff threatened a delivery person with a firearm.  The firearm was not discharged and no injuries occurred.

Brenham police said at the time that Obenhoff failed to comply with officers’ commands to leave his residence in downtown, prompting a standoff with law enforcement.  He eventually exited the residence and was taken into custody, and police found the firearm in his apartment.

Deadly Conduct, in this case, is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by no more than a year’s confinement in the county jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

While on bail awaiting trial, Obenhoff was subject to conditions to release including weekly drug and alcohol tests and alcohol treatment.

The State was represented by Assistant District Attorney Lorraine Nwora and District Attorney Julie Renken, and the defendant was represented by Aaron Kleinschmidt.

Regarding the agreed sentence, Renken said Obenhoff “was essentially on probation for 10 months before trial.”  She said, “By all accounts he is a different person from the time of this offense, and I wish him continued growth and success.”
