TxDOT PROPOSING RAISED MEDIANS ON SOUTH DAY STREET; OPEN HOUSE NOV. 16

TxDOT invites public feedback regarding plans to add raised medians along South Day Street in Brenham, from West Stone Street to Highway 290.

An open house will be held on Thursday, November 16th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Blinn College Student Center in Brenham.

The proposed project along South Day Street would replace the existing center turn lane with raised medians and dedicated left-turn lanes at selected locations.

TxDOT says the raised median design would reduce vehicle conflicts between left-turning traffic and head-on traffic, as well as crossing traffic from adjacent properties and side streets.  U-turns would also be incorporated to allow turnaround movements.

The TxDOT – Bryan District office is developing the design and conducting environmental studies.  Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2025.

TxDOT says additional right-of-way would be needed for the changes, but it does not anticipate any residential or non-residential properties would be displaced.  Currently, only one undisclosed location along the project would require right-of-way acquisition.

The November 16th public meeting will allow attendees to review project displays and meet with TxDOT staff.  The information presented at the meeting will also be online at www.txdot.gov, keyword search “BS 36J Raised Medians”.  Project comments must be received by Monday, December 4th

  1. This will make it difficult to access the businesses located along the route. U- turns are not very feasible for locations close to 290 or near the hill on Day street. Ask people in Bryan-College where TxDot did this. Are accidents frequent energy to justify installing medians?

  2. These medians have been met with nothing but complaints in College Station. Are there really so many crashes on S Day St to justify the expenditure and construction inconvenience to the whole city for what will certainly be a several month long project? The proposal doesn’t even address the area where cross traffic is the worst, SH 36 south of 290, between Walmart and the Bluebonnet Shopping Center.

  3. This will be an inconvenience but it is the safest thing to do. Thank you TxDOT.

  4. Wouldn’t a raised median in that location hinder access to the Hospital Emergency Room entrance when traveling from the South on Day Street? That in itself seems like a reason NOT to do raised medians there.

    1. Per the article, there’ll be dedicated left turn lanes at select locations and I would think they’ll have one at the entrance to the hospital. A good reason to go to the public meeting to find out.

  5. Do not do this we live in college station they are doing this here it hurts businesses and cancel the Christmas parade here and makes it hard to get to the business you are trying to get two

  6. I don’t see a problem with the existing layout. Installing medians would make it more difficult and time consuming to gain far side access from streets and parking lots when the far side traffic is heavy and nearside is momentarily clear. Cross traffic is not that big of a problem as it is now, as people know how to deal with it. Entrances like Sonic, HEB/Walgreens, Specs would become bigger nightmares than they already are. The medians on 36 south of US 290 are already a royal pain. And construction would make the busiest street in Brenham a total nightmare. Leave it alone.

  7. TxDOT played this same card in College Station, and now Texas Avenue, University Drive, and George Bush Drive are complete nightmares. The medians are a massive inconvenience, and the result will be (as it has been there,) extensive use of side streets to get around the congested turning points created by the medians. This will create a massive headache for those between Stone and Atlow, as well as cause issues on S. Austin, Progress, and Airline. Additionally, this will only worsen the problem of trying to turn left onto Day Street during peak hours; as it stands, the center turn lane is often the only opportunity to do so in a reasonably timely and safe manner. Imagine leaving Sonic and having to go down to the 290 feeder and double back on Lubbock to get back to Day Street. As in College Station, I’m sure this “proposal” is just going to pave ahead regardless of input from the City or citizens, which is a shame.

  8. Day street is no problem coming head on with apposing traffic other than right at the heb – walgreens Area to the 290 light, on the other hand try going out 36 north as high school lets out and traffic is backed up from blue bell to the concrete place, parents and students alike will drive that whole length in the turn lane to the taco shop at full speed to get ahead of someone and not have to wait in line. Then as we turn into that same turn lane to try to cross into the neighborhood on the west side of buisness 36 OMG your cussed for blocking them and your just trying to get home.

  9. I avoid this section now, when there is a break in traffic cars from both sides shoot into the turn lane causing near collisions. That is why the Brenham police have to direct traffic there frequently. Designated spots to turn should help this.

    1. Off duty Brenham police officers are hired by H‑E‑B to direct traffic there on high volume days – holiday weekends, Christmas, thanksgiving, etc.

  10. TXDOT are you running out of things to do with our tax dollars? If it’s not broken don’t fix it. Need some help with a light at HEB on Day so folks that insist on taking a left to go north on Day won’t kill themselves or anyone else cause only other options go thru hospital parking lot or other not so good options going around ect. Raised medians really wasted money from Stone to 290. HEB really needs a parking garage with an exit and a light to Day be better. Parking is pretty tight at HEB now.

  11. Brenham does not want this – I live in Montgomery – TxDot did this on Hwy 105 from Conroe to Montgomery and it is a nightmare – it is hard to get to some locations as no turn lane, which causes you to have to drive past where you want to go and make a u-turn and come back, which is dangerous in traffic and not much turn area to do so – the other day a delivery truck had a hard time and had to do a u-turn, which blocked traffic – not one person I have talked to likes the raised medians with the selected turn lanes, and would like to know who came up with this crazy idea!!

    1. Agree with you 100%. What was a leisurely drive now takes over an hour from Montgomery to I-45.
TXDOT did the same on 1960 at the Willowbrook Mall stretch.
Made already bad traffic a nightmare.
Don’t fall for the smoke & mirrors.

    2. I agree. That would make some place very hard to get to. Very unnecessary. What fool came up with that idea? They’re already making a mess at HEB and Academy by not letting people turn left. Exits are slanted for only right exit. Will make a huge mess.

    3. Double check the stated crash statistics using the txdot CRIS data base. I am coming up with 5 times fewer crashes for the medians put in on Texas Ave in Bryan than what was published as the given reason for putting in the medians.

I was told by a road contractor at a public txdot feedback meeting that that is the database consulted to develop a risk analysis to quantify putting in medians. It’s a simple tool to use. Not sure what I am missing that I came up with such different results for the same time period.

      Give it a try!

    4. All you need to do is ask the citizens of Navasota and Bryan/College Station to hear what they have to say about them. The problem is at HEB not the entire street.

    5. Yes I agree with you as they have them in Bryan-College station and they are pain. Businesses on Texas Avenue in Bryan has lost customers. They have them in front of the business I work for and to get in the parking lot where some of us park takes extra time to go past the business and turn around to park in the lot. No one I know here in Bryan-College Station likes the raised medians.

    6. Totally agree. Bryan and CS is already getting impossible to get around. Streets look like a drunk architect designed this. Streets scream ACCIDENT!

    7. I agree. No! They did this in Bryan and College Station and it’s horrible. I had to backtrack for several businesses and Dentist. It’s awful. The business owners do not like it either. I quit going to a few businesses in Bryan because of this change. It’s very frustrating
