BURTON CITY COUNCIL ADOPTS RULES FOR LAAS-WEEREN PARK

The Burton City Council adopted rules and regulations for Laas-Weeren Park and repealed a prior park ordinance at its meeting on Tuesday.

City Secretary Angela Harrington said the last city park ordinance was repealed due to it creating a park commission that was never implemented.

The ordinance approved Tuesday, which can be read here, outlines rules outlawing camping or sleeping overnight in the park, having an open fire, loitering or panhandling.  Alcoholic beverages are also not allowed, except in circumstances allowed by the city council, such as during council-approved events at the park.

The ordinance also makes it unlawful to enter the park from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays, and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Violators are subject to be removed from the park, charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $200 upon conviction.

In addition, the ordinance lays out the process of any gifts of labor/materials or monetary donations for the benefit of the park.

Also on Tuesday, the council approved revisions and updates to the city’s personnel policy.  Harrington said the changes make the policy more applicable to the city as it currently operates, as the last policy was dated 2005.
