BURTON ISD WELCOMES BACK STUDENTS WEDNESDAY

Burton ISD embarks on another school year today (Wednesday).

(Mark Whitehead)

The school district heads into the new year with new leadership at the helm.  Superintendent Vikki Curry, who came to Burton ISD in June after previously working in Galveston ISD, says it has been nothing but smiles and warm welcomes for her since she arrived, and that she is eager to continue the work started over the summer.

With many school districts around the state adopting deficit budgets, Curry says much time has been spent meeting with leaders across Burton ISD to set out what the needs are versus wants or wishes, while also reiterating to them that students will not see a negative impact.

Bond construction continues around the district, and Curry says the continued flexibility from staff and the public is appreciated.  She says the current areas being worked on will not impact students, but a plan is in place for once construction gets closer to the schools.

Curry says there are things in the past that will not change, but she and her team are working hard to turn the tide.  She is confident that this time next year, the district will be able to look back on these past three years as “a distant memory.”

As school gets underway, Curry asks families to be patient with morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals during these first few weeks.  She also asks those who are coming to drop off or pick up their students to not block driveways in order to be courteous to the district’s neighbors.
