CUBS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT WITH 50-28 WIN OVER ELLISON
The Brenham Cub Football Team has clinched a playoff spot after last (Friday) night's win over the Ellison Eagles at Leo Buckley Stadium in Killeen.
The Cubs would strike first with Jordan Harvey tossing a a 48-yard touchdown pass to Chris Guidry. Bleu Cienega added the extra point to make it 7-0 Brenham with 6:47 left in the first quarter.
It didn't take long for Ellison to answer, as Sidney Holland found Travaris Turner-Smith on a 60-yard touchdown pass. Franky Yepez kicked the extra point to tie it 7-7 with 6:10 left in the first quarter.
Brenham went back in front on a 65-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Harvey to Cartelle Brown. After a penalty on the extra point by the Eagles, the Cubs went for two, and scored on a Jakoby Dixon run. That made it 15-7 Brenham with 55 seconds left.
The Cubs added to their lead at the beginning of the second quarter on a 46-yard touchdown run by Dixon, the first of his five touchdowns on the night. Cienega's kick made it 22-7 with 11:29 left in the second quarter.
The Eagles found the end zone a second time on an 11-yard pass from Holland to Turner-Smith. Yepez nailed the extra point to cut Brenham's lead to 22-14 at the 7:39 mark.
The Cubs would get one more score before the end of the half on a 12-yard touchdown run by Dixon with 1:10 left. Cienega added the PAT to increase the lead to 29-14.
It didn't take Brenham long to find the end zone again, as Dixon took the opening kick of the second half and ran it back 80-yards for a touchdown. Cienega kicked the extra point again and made it 36-14.
Dixon would add his third rushing touchdown, fourth overall, later in the third quarter on a 39-yard touchdown run. Cienega's PAT gave the Cub's a 43-14 advantage at the 5:16 mark.
Ellison got back on the scoreboard as Holland hit Kai'Andre Sayles for a touchdown pass, and Yepez made the extra point to cut the Brenham lead to 43-21 with 1:31 left in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Dixon just missed a 90-yard touchdown run. He got the handoff from Harvey at his own 10-yard line, and ran it 89 yards the other way only to get stopped at the one-yard line. Dixon would later score on a one-yard run out of the Wildcat. Cienega kicked the PAT to make it 50-21 with 7:16 remaining in the game.
Ellison rounded out the scoring on a pass from Holland to Prince Hall with 5:29 left, and Yepez added the extra point to make it 50-28 Brenham, which was the final score.
Dixon finished the game with 30 carries for 292 yards and four rushing touchdowns to go along with the kickoff return for a touchdown. The total gives him 2,966 career rushing yards, which moves him past Cleveland Franklin and Brandell Jackson, and puts him sixth all-time.
He is also now at 1,785 yards rushing for the season, which puts him to seventh all-time moving him past Homer Borgstedte (1952), Lamont Roberts (2005), Klartel Claridy (2011), Matt Murski (1971), and Roosevelt Leaks (1970).
Dixon is also now at 288 career points, which puts him fifth all-time. He passed Tien Pham in last week's game.
He is now at 46 career touchdowns, which passes Floyd Sommer (1944-1945) for fourth all-time.
For touchdowns in a single season, Dixon is at 27, which moves him past Miles Langehenning (1967), Donyell Jones (2001), Matt Murski (1972), and Lamont Roberts (2005), and puts him at fifth overall.
