Idlebird has served as Somerville ISD’s band director since 1992. During that time, the Somerville band has grown in size and achieved numerous accolades.
According to Idlebird’s biography posted on the district website, the band has made six appearances to the UIL State Marching Contest and had 14 students make All-State Band. The band has received the Sweepstakes trophy 19 straight years with a total of 28; 31 first divisions in UIL Marching, missing a year due to COVID; 31 consecutive first divisions in UIL Concert; and 29 first divisions in UIL Sightreading.
Somerville ISD says it is proud of Idlebird and the lives he has positively impacted, adding that he has helped make the Yegua Fighting Band “one of Texas’s most respected small school band programs.”
Nobody deserves this honor more. I was on the board when he was hired. We knew there was an improvement from day one. Mr I has inspired many students with his dedication and professionalism. Thank you Mr I.
