Atwood seeks the position held currently by Judge Douglas Zwiener, who is not running for re-election.

Atwood retired in 2020 as a sergeant from the Houston Police Department, with extensive leadership and investigative experience.  His time in the department included assignment to the FBI Violent Gang/DEA Task Force, appointment to the Transnational Organized Crime Task Force, service on the FBI Violent Crimes Squad, special deputation with the U.S. Department of Justice, leading multiple department divisions and investigating complex criminal cases.

Currently, Atwood is a reserve deputy with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the director of safety and security for the Cowboy Church of Brenham and a board member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee for Washington County.  He has also served as chairman of Brenham’s Tourism Advisory Board, lifetime past president of the Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo, and as a member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Arts Committee, Washington County Fair and Rodeo Sponsors and Barbecue Cook-off Committee, Brenham FFA Scholarship Board and Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce.  He and his wife, Kelli, operate Kippers Kountry Store in downtown Chappell Hill.

Past experience for Atwood includes serving as event services supervisor for NRG Park from 1987 to 2017.  He is a certified instructor with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE), holds a Master Certificate with TCOLE and earned a B.A. in Organizational Leadership (Summa Cum Laude) from Mountain State University.

Atwood says with over 39 years of experience in policing, federal task forces and large-scale event security management, it would be an honor to serve the residents of Precinct 1 and apply his knowledge to the judicial and magistrate duties as their next Justice of the Peace.  He says he applauds Judge Zwiener for his years of service and will always seek his wisdom and guidance.

Joel Romo of Texana Public Affairs will serve as Atwood’s campaign treasurer.
