TOP LOCAL SPORTS STORIES OF 2025

Another year is in the books, and coming up with the top sports stories was not easy (especially since I missed a large chunk of it.)

I know some folks might have been expecting me to put my injury on the list, but I decided not to do it. As announcer, my job has always been to promote the players and what they accomplished. It's not about me. I'm the storyteller, not the story.

So, I made the list about the players and what happened to them in 2025. It was hard, because a lot of good stuff happened.

1.) Chris Guidry sets all-time school receiving records.

Chris Guidry had an incredible year for Brenham where he not only broke several school records, he smashed them. Guidry set Brenham Cub single season records for receptions with 70, for receiving yards with 1,355 and receiving touchdowns with 22. He also set career records with 136 receptions, 2,861 receiving yards, and 36 touchdowns. Guidry provided many exciting catches that thrilled fans over the team's second straight 11-2 run. In addition to that, he was also this year's Homecoming King.

2.) Former NFL Super Bowl Champion Malcom Brown inducted into the Brenham Cub Football Hall of Honor

Malcom Brown returned home to take his rightful place in the Brenham Cub Football Hall of Honor. Brown was an All-State Defensive Tackle for Brenham, who then on to success in college with the Texas Longhorns, and two Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots. He was inducted along with Donyell Jones, Michael Walker, and Ty Schlottmann. Former Head Coach Glen West said that you would be hard pressed to find a better Hall of Honor class than those four.

3.) Blinn Cheer and Dance win three national titles

Back in April, the Blinn Treasures Dance Team won their third consecutive Pom Junior College Division Title and also captured the Dance Spirit Rally Open Championship. The Blinn Cheerleaders won the Advance All Girls Junior College Title.  That makes 21 national championships for the Cheer and Dance program. Since coming to Brenham Coach Sarah Barland-Flisowski has turned the program into one of the country's elite.

4.) Blinn Men’s Soccer Team earns first NJCAA National Championship Tournament Appearance

The Blinn Men’s Soccer Team made their first ever appearance in the National Championship Tournament. They were also Region XIV South Champions for the first time ever. Sam Sebagabo became the Buccaneers' first ever Men’s Soccer All-American. The Blinn coaches were also named as the Staff of the Year. The team finished with a record of 14-5-1.

5.) Washington County Minor Girls make it to the Little League State Championship game

After winning District and Sectionals, the Washington County Minor Girls made it to the State Tournament. It came down to Washington County needing two wins over Industrial to claim the championship. In a pair of thrillers, they won the first game 1-0, but Industrial won the second game 3-1. Washington County may have finished as runner ups, but that still doesn’t erase an incredible season. The future for the Brenham Cubettes and the Burton Lady Panthers looks very bright.

6.) Burton Baseball makes it to the State Semifinals

The Burton Panthers had an incredible run in the playoffs. Their quest for a state championship came up just short against Overton in the State Semifinals. Overton won the first game 8-5, Burton won the second game 6-0, but Overton won the deciding game 4-1.

7.) Brenham Cub Football makes it to the Region Semifinals for the second straight year.

The Brenham Cub Football Team advanced to the Regional Semifinals of the playoffs for the second straight season. Brenham has had back-to-back 11-2 seasons. Their only losses were to District Champion University and to Iowa Colony, who was ranked #4 in the State.

8.) Blinn Volleyball makes a coaching change and still gets sixth straight trip to the National Tournament.

The Bucs needed a new head coach after Terry Gamble left to take the head coaching job at West Texas A&M to be nearer to family. Enter Gregg Whitis. While the man running the show changed, the one thing that didn’t was the success on the court. Blinn finished 38-5 and earned their sixth straight trip to the National Tournament.

9.) Burton Lady Panther Volleyball returns to Region Title game for the second straight season

Burton had a huge year, which saw them win 40 matches including a stretch of winning 14 in a row. Their season came to an end in a 3-2 thriller against the Shiner Lady Apaches in the Regional Championship Match. For the second year in a row, they swept through district without losing a set. Lexi Broesche won the overall MVP, while Paige Fritsche was the Defensive MVP. Their teammates also took home multiple All-District honors.

10.) Blinn Cross Country runs at the National Meet in snow

For the first time since the program has been back, the Blinn College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams competed in the National Championship Meet and the National Half Marathon Meet. The meets were held in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and the athletes had to complete their runs on courses that were covered in snow.  At the National Cross Country Meet, the Men were 14th and the Women 18th. At the National Half Marathon, the Men were 10th and the Women were 13th. Head Coach Jesse Parker was named as the Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Matthew Binkley was named as the Atlantic Region Male Athlete of the Year, and Clare White was named as the Atlantic Region Female Athlete of the Year.
