An offensive showcase and stout defense in the second quarter helped guide Blinn College women’s basketball to an 82-48 Region 14 victory over Coastal Bend College on Wednesday at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.
The Buccaneers trailed 15-12 following the first quarter but rebounded in the second with a 27-5 scoring differential, and never looked back.
“Our energy was great considering – and no excuses – we came into tonight having played four games in 45 days,” Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. “It’s hard to maintain momentum and get into a competitive flow with that much time off, but I think our players found the energy and the drive in themselves tonight to power through and get a win.”
The Bucs (13-7, 3-1 Region 14) began the second period on a 19-0 run and didn’t allow a Cougars bucket until 1:32 remained in the quarter.
Sophomore guard Jasey Campbell was a catalyst during Blinn’s outburst, as she got her team going with a steal and a layup and hit a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 11 points in the period. Her triple with 8:40 to go in the quarter gave the Bucs the lead for good at 17-15.
“We started out a little slow offensively, but I think what got us going was just encouragement and energy,” Campbell said. “We trust each other and coach Jenkins trusts us to keep shooting even when the shots are falling, because any one of us has the ability to break out and give us a boost.”
Blinn was ahead 31-15 before Coastal Bend interrupted the run with a 3, and the Bucs went on to take a 39-20 cushion into halftime.
Blinn carried a 54-33 advantage into the fourth quarter.
On the night, Campbell tallied a game-high 22 points for her 10th double-digit scoring effort of the season.
“Our post players were making great passes and our guards were finding me in open spots, and I just did my job,” Campbell added.
Sophomore guard Taylor Spencer tacked on 13 points and freshman guards Mariah Davis and Chloe Williams chipped in 12 apiece.
Blinn will get back to work when it hosts region foe Tyler at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
