Three people were taken to the hospital after two separate accidents Thursday afternoon on Highway 290, east of Brenham.

The first accident occurred around 4:15 p.m. at the highway’s intersection with Jozwiak Road.  According to DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz, a 2011 Toyota Tundra towing a trailer failed to yield at the stop sign on Jozwiak Road as it attempted to turn left onto Highway 290.  It was struck in the driver’s side by an eastbound 2013 Nissan Altima.

The driver of the Nissan, 61-year-old Gladys Rush of Hempstead, was taken by ambulance to Baylor Scott & White in Brenham with non-incapacitating injuries.  The driver of the Toyota, 77-year-old Raymond Whaley of Somerville, refused treatment at the scene.

The second crash was reported just after 5:45 p.m. at Highway 290 and Wonder Hill Road.  According to Sgt. Ruiz, a 2019 Ford Econoline van and a 2007 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer were driving west on Highway 290, with the van in the right hand lane and the truck tractor in the left lane.  Sgt. Ruiz said the van attempted to get into the center median turn lane and turned in front of the truck tractor.

The drivers of the Ford and the truck tractor were both transported by ambulance to Baylor Scott & White in Brenham.  The driver of the Ford, 27-year-old Charles Jordan of Kentucky, suffered serious injuries, while the driver of the truck tractor, 64-year-old Michael McCain of Missouri City, had minor injuries.
