33RD ANNUAL BURTON COTTON GIN FESTIVAL SATURDAY

The oldest operating cotton gin in the United States will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday) at the 33rd Annual Burton Cotton Gin Festival.

The free, family-friendly event opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m., offering a full day of music, entertainment and history.

Burton Cotton Gin Museum Executive Director Steph Jarvis says the long-running festival continues to get better and better each year.

The day begins at 10 a.m. with the Main Street Parade and Children’s Bicycle Parade through downtown Burton.  Visitors can then enjoy dozens of food and craft vendors, farming and folk life demonstrations, antique engines and tractors, and the famous bubblegum blowing, pie eating and cotton seed pulling contests.

Jarvis says this year’s festival will see the return of a crowd favorite: the tractor pull.

Guests can also take tours of the historic 1914 cotton gin starting at noon, and watch the gin come to life and gin a bale of cotton at 3 p.m.

Live music will include The Pettit Brothers from 11 a.m. to noon, Sean Orr and Texas Gold from noon to 2 p.m., the Jodie Mikula Orchestra from 2 to 4 p.m. and the Black Cat Choir from 4 to 6 p.m.

Admission to the festival is free, but donations are welcome for the restoration and preservation of the cotton gin.
