A Washington County attorney and the presiding Brenham Municipal Court judge is running to serve as judge of the 335th Judicial District Court.

John D. Winkelmann will run on the Republican ticket in the March 5, 2024 primary election.

Current Judge Reva Towslee Corbett, who will have served 20 years at the end of 2024, is not running for another term.  She said she wishes to spend more time with family and plans to take senior judge status beginning in January 2025, serving as a substitute judge when needed.

Winkelmann says his ability to remain fair and understand both sides are core qualities to serving in this role.

Winkelmann received his license to practice law in November 2012 after studying at St. Mary’s University.  He started his legal career in January 2013 as a prosecutor for the Washington County Attorney’s Office.  He opened a private practice in Brenham in July 2016 and has served as the presiding municipal court judge since January 2020.

Winkelmann feels he can bring a unique skillset and perspective, having worked as a prosecutor, defense attorney and in municipal court.  He says he understands that as the area grows, so do the responsibilities of this position, so he wants to ensure that all parties involved receive the necessary docket time to properly present their cases.

The 335th Judicial District Court is comprised of Washington, Bastrop, Burleson and Lee counties.  It presides over felony criminal cases, juvenile cases, family law cases, cases involving title to land, election contest cases, civil matters where money or damages involved amounts to $200 or more, and other matters in which jurisdiction is not placed in another trial court.

Winkelmann serves as president of the Christ Lutheran Day School Board of Directors and is a board member of the Brenham Children’s Chorus.  He is also a member of the State Bar of Texas, Texas Municipal Courts Education Center, Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, past member of the Texas District and County Attorney’s Association, and a Master Mason with the Graham Masonic Lodge of Brenham.  He and his wife, Geneva, are active in each of their home churches, Christ Lutheran Church of Brenham and Brenham Presbyterian Church.

Aaron Kleinschmidt, an attorney at Shane Phelps Law of Lee County, will serve as Winkelmann’s campaign treasurer.

  1. I am very proud to personally know Mr. Winkelmann. John is a Christian and walks it every day of his life. He has a great patience that immediately comes through to his clients. He spends as much time as it takes to visit his incarcerated clients as necessary. John has diligently served the Court in the role of a court appointed attorney, and treats them the same as a client that retains his services outright. As an old soul, Mr. Winkelmann has not only an impressive resume of experience, but wisdom and a unique insight in the world of law. He will serve the 335th Judicial District with knowledge, professionalism, and passion.

  2. I have used John as my attorney. He listens very, very well. He thinks about a situation from all around. He is very well educated man. Wishing him the best!
