CUBS LAST-SECOND TD DELIVERS FIRST WIN OF 2018
The Brenham Cubs made their first win under head coach Eliot Allen one to remember as they rallied in the final minutes to defeat Houston Heights, 13-12 at Cubs Stadium, Friday night.
The Cubs (1-2) trailed 12-6 with just over 2:00 left and faced a fourth down and 11 yards to go on their own 27 yard line. Quarterback Garrison Weiss hit senior receiver Anthony Walton on a 12-yard catch and run, giving the Cubs life.
Following a 12-yard pass to Haydon Allen and an 18-yard run by Tyree Jackson, the Cubs moved the ball to the Bulldog’s one-yard line, where Jackson pounded it into the end zone.
Brenham’s defense held the Heights (0-3) offense over the final :37 to hold on for their first win unde coach Allen.
“It was a tough one,” said Allen. “We had to battle long and hard to get this one.”
“I’m proud of our kids...they never put their heads down, and that’s how you win ball games.”
Heights jumped out to a 12-0 lead midway through the second quarter as E’munn Parker streaked 19 yards for a touchdown, and quarterback Derrick King powered in from 1-yard out.
The Cubs got on the board with 3:47 left in the first half. Alldyn Schroeder fired a 39-yard pass to Weiss, who was down at the one-yard line. Jackson then went in for the first of his two scores.
“It’s great to get a win,” said Allen. “I firmly believe the three teams we’ve played so far will really get us ready for district play.”
“We’ve got to take this game, we’ve got to take the mistakes we made, fix them, and get ready for district in two weeks.”
The Cubs will travel to Bastrop, Friday, September 28th for the district opener at Cedar Creek. Kickoff is set for 7:30, with a 7:00 pre-game on AM-1280 KWHI, FM-101.7 and www.kwhi.com.
