SUBJECT WITH MENTAL HEALTH WARRANT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY IN SEALY AFTER STANDOFF

Austin County authorities were involved Wednesday in a two-hour standoff with a man who police say was having a mental crisis.

At around 4 p.m., Sealy police officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of Circle Drive.  Prior to their arrival, police obtained a mental health warrant for the detention and evaluation of the subject.

Officers entered the home and found the man, who they say then barricaded himself in a room, armed with a knife.

The Austin County Special Response Team (SRT) was activated and arrived on scene to begin negotiations.  After approximately two hours of failed attempts to make contact with the subject, authorities deployed “less-lethal munitions.”  Police say the man was taken into custody without further incident.

Sealy police say as this was a mental health warrant, the name of the man will not be released.

The Austin County SRT is comprised of members from the Austin County Sheriff’s Office, Bellville Police Department, Sealy Police Department, Wallis Police Department, Austin County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
