SUPREME COURT BLOCKS SEVERAL PART OF TEXAS’ ABORTION LAW

Tuesday, the Supreme Court blocked several key parts of the 2013 Texas abortion Law, siding with the abortion rights advocates and health care providers.

The unsigned order ruled that Texas could suspend a rule requiring abortion clinics in the state to spend millions of dollars on hospital-level upgrades.

The court suspended the part of the law that required abortion providers in McAllen and El Paso to have admitting privileges in nearby hospitals. The admitting procedures are still required in the rest of the state.

The rule requiring hospital-level upgrades and admitting privileges have shuttered more than a dozen clinics across the state. Until the Supreme Court ruling, only clinics in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Dallas/ Fort Worth remained open.

Critics called the measure a backdoor effort of outlaw abortions.
