BURTON SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES PAY INCREASES

The Burton School Board approved pay increases for district employees at their meeting Monday evening.  Teachers in the district will receive a $1000 pay raise and all other employees will see a 3 percent increase.  In addition, all employees will receive an additional $1000 to help pay for health insurance premiums.

The board also reviewed the proposed budget for the upcoming school year.  The budget is based on keeping the same tax rate of $1.17 per $100 valuation.  With the increase in property valuations this year, tax revenue to the district is expected to be up 8.8 percent over last year.  State funding to the district will be $415,000 lower than last year due to the increase in local funding.  The district will also be paying less back to the state this year in their chapter 41 or Robinhood payment.  They will owe the state $105,000 this year compared to $510,000 last year.  The decrease is mainly due to an increase in daily student attendance and the drop in mineral values last year.

The board went through the $4.93 million balanced budget line by line, questioning each amount.  The budget is down slightly from last year’s $4.97 million budget.  It will now be presented at a public hearing next Monday at 6:30 PM at the Burton Administration Office.  The tax rate and the budget are expected to be adopted by the board at that time.
